“From the pages of a novel to the rooms of a shared home; from the 1940s to the present; this talk takes the form of a trip across time and space to narrate a story set within the little-explored phenomenon of student housing cooperatives. Despite having existed for over 100 years, this particular type of student home has escaped the scholar’s radar. Like the cooperative movement itself this peculiar type of student home exists as a hidden alternative to its institutional (halls of residence, colleges), commodified (purposely built student accommodation, houses in multiple occupation), and self-run (fraternities and sororities) others. Its life is mostly self-narrated by the cooperators themselves, which raises a question of method: how to approach and talk about a phenomenon whose history has been built through narration where fiction and fact are difficult to tell apart.”
